IISc Online Webinar:

Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a very suitable technique for the fabrication of complicated structures and intricate geometries. Since AM can bring down the cost, time, and energy for making desired components, it does find importance in most of the manufacturing industries. The AM process, however, meets a number of challenges that impede the acceptance of the process as a major manufacturing technique.

In AM products, porosity, internal cracks, surface defects, chemical inhomogeneity, non-equilibrium phases are very common and could result in material failure during service. Most of the problems have their origin in metallurgical factors during the process. Some of these critical issues will be highlighted in the seminar with recommendations for optimal solutions.

About the Speaker

The webinar will be hosted by Dr. Satyam Suwas who is a Professor and currently the Chair of Materials Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He obtained his Ph.D. in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kanpur, and worked at Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad; University of Lorraine, France, and RWTH Aachen, Germany before joining the Indian Institute of Science.

His specialization includes materials processing, microstructural engineering, and the mechanical behavior of materials.
